Tucson, AZ (November 16, 2019) – The bicyclist involved in a hit-and-run collision on Tucson’s south side on Friday has died.
Officers from the Tucson Police Department have identified the cyclist as 45-year-old Eric Michael Noriega. According to a press release from TPD, police briefly closed South Park Avenue between East 22nd Street and East 29th Street to East Silverlake Road. At 3:09 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of East 27th Street and South Park Avenue to investigate the crash and treat the victims. Personnel with the Tucson Fire Department transported Noriega to Banner University Medical Center, where he died later that day from his injuries.
Investigators said Noriega was in the bike lane when the suspect, who is believed to have operated a dark-colored pickup truck similar to a Ford Ranger, hit Noriega from behind and fled the scene.
Investigators determined speed does appear to be a factor in the collision and are still investigating. Police said that anyone with information should call 88-CRIME.
Our condolences go out to Eric Michael Noriega’s family at this time.
Per information from the Arizona Department of Transportation, pedestrian and bicycle accidents are on the rise. Furthermore, approximately 40 percent of fatal bicycle crashes were caused by distracted or hit-and-run drivers. Oftentimes, these drivers hit cyclists from behind and flee the scene of the accident to avoid legal consequences.
Cyclists are especially vulnerable to serious injuries or death. When victims succumb to their injuries, families are left to pick up the pieces in the aftermath, negotiating with insurance companies and handling funeral costs while grieving their loved ones. However, the victims and families affected by these bicycle accidents can seek legal aid from a skilled personal injury lawyer.
