Phoenix, AZ (November 18, 2019) – Officers from the Phoenix Police Department are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 17 Monday night.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the pedestrian was walking in the northbound lanes of I-17 at Jomax Road and was struck by a vehicle. The Department of Public Safety said that the investigation remains active, and it appears that Phoenix EMTs and fire rescue units were on the scene shortly after the incident occurred. It is unclear if the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene or transported to the hospital before they died.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
In 2018, Arizona had the highest rate of pedestrian deaths in the nation, according to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association. And in 2016, Arizona had a pedestrian death rate of 1.4 deaths per 100,000 people for the first six months of that year, going onto record nearly 200 pedestrian deaths for the year.
These serious incidents can result in tragic consequences for victims and their families. From long-term physical problems and medical bills for victims to emotional trauma or financial difficulties for grieving families, pedestrian accidents result in devastating, unforeseen circumstances.
