Phoenix, AZ (August 3, 2019) – A multi-vehicle crash on Saturday afternoon, August 3rd, blocked the right two lanes of I-17 at the Durango Curve.
According to officials on the scene, the wreck occurred at 5:50 p.m., after multiple vehicles collided in the northbound lanes of I-17, also known as the Black Canyon Freeway, at the Durango Curve, where I-17 and US 60 meet. Police and fire rescue units responded to the scene, which closed the two lanes of traffic for about an hour, and assisted injured victims.
The drivers’ information and their current conditions have not been released, and investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash. All lanes re-opened by 6:50 p.m.
Information released by the Arizona Department of Transportation shows that nearly 55,000 accidents and more than 35,000 accident injuries occurred across the state in 2018 alone, with more than half of those accidents involving multiple vehicles. ADOT data also reported that serious accidents are on the rise, and 2018 numbers were part of a steady year-over-year increase in injury wrecks since 2015.
