Phoenix, AZ (January 16, 2020) – A hit-and-run crash on Thursday evening has left one man dead.
Phoenix police said a bicyclist was struck by a car in the area of 15th Avenue and Southern Avenue around 5:30 p.m.
Detective Luis Samudio said the victim, identified as 25-year-old Mario Hernandez, was in the two-way left-turn lane when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound. That vehicle then fled the scene, leaving Hernandez with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities say that the suspect vehicle is a white SUV that was found damaged and leaking fluid at a parking lot not far from the scene of the crash. Police have not been able to confirm who was driving the SUV, but the investigation is ongoing.
Our condolences go out to the family of Mario Hernandez at this time.
Several of the nearly 30,000 collisions that took place last year in Arizona were hit-and-run accidents. And these incidents are often caused by distracted or impaired drivers, who leave the scene to avoid legal consequences. This leaves victims and their families especially vulnerable in the aftermath of an injurious or fatal accident.
Those who sustain injuries in these collisions through no fault of their own may be left with high costs from medical bills and vehicle damage. Oftentimes, victims may succumb to the injuries they sustained in a hit-and-run accident, leaving their families to pick up the pieces. However, those affected can contact an accident attorney in Phoenix to safeguard their legal rights after a hit-and-run accident.
