Phoenix, AZ (September 26, 2020) – State Route 51 has reopened following a crash that happened at the Shea Boulevard exit on Saturday morning around 1:45 a.m.

Per reports from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, serious injuries were reported in the accident, and one person is currently in police custody. Officials say that witnesses called in to report a driver heading the wrong way down SR 51, also known as the Piestewa Freeway.

All traffic was directed to exit at 32nd Street as officials investigated the scene throughout the early morning hours. Phoenix EMTs were at the scene shortly after the accident occurred and transported at least one person to an area medical center.

It’s unclear how the accident was caused, though investigators are still piecing together the events leading up to the crash. The accident remains under investigation, and no word on the victims’ current conditions has been given.
