Phoenix, AZ (July 10, 2019) – Westbound Interstate 10 was closed in Tolleson on Wednesday morning, July 10th, following a deadly pedestrian accident.
According to officials, a driver hit and killed a man running across I-10, also known as the Papago Freeway, at 91st Avenue. One witness told authorities that a vehicle stopped in the middle of the freeway and a man got out and ran across the road when he was hit by the pickup truck and killed. One witness added that the stopped vehicle then drove away from the scene, but troopers are unable to confirm that information.
Arizona troopers, with the help of the Maricopa County Medical Examiner, identified the pedestrian as a 54-year-old man from New Mexico by his fingerprints and tattoos. The Department of Public Safety doesn’t plan to release his name until his family has been notified.
Troopers say the driver of the pickup truck that struck the man remained at the scene. The driver isn’t facing criminal charges at this time.
The incident remains under investigation.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
