Peoria, AZ – UPDATE: Teen Killed in Pedestrian Accident at 83rd Ave & Cholla St

Peoria, AZ (December 5, 2019) – Authorities from the Peoria Police Department are still investigating a pedestrian accident that left a 14-year-old boy dead last month.

The crash happened in front of Peoria High School at 83rd Avenue and Cholla Street around 8:00 a.m. Per reports from Officer Brandon Sheffert of the Peoria Police Department, the freshman student was crossing in the crosswalk with the warning lights flashing when he was struck by a van traveling northbound. Officer Sheffert said that the driver remained on the scene to cooperate with authorities, and local EMTs arrived at the scene to transport the boy to the hospital with severe injuries. He later died at the hospital.

The investigation closed 83rd Avenue between Cactus Road and Grand Avenue for several hours. Several days later, a female student told police that she almost got hit by a car in the exact crosswalk where the teenage boy was killed.

Now, the City of Peoria said that they are planning on doing a study with Peoria High School and the Peoria Police Department to see if the crosswalk needs modifications.

Police are still investigating the crash. At this point, no charges have been filed against the driver of the van that hit the teenager, but investigators are trying to determine if speed or distracted driving might have been factors in the accident.

Our deepest condolences go out to the deceased’s family.
