Mesa, AZ (August 24, 2020) – Officers with the Mesa Police Department have identified a man killed in an accident involving a go-kart and BMW that occurred early Sunday morning in Mesa.

Authorities dispatched to the scene of the crash say that it happened around 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Gilbert Road and Broadway Road. Police say that 28-year-old Jeremy Koenig was driving westbound in a go-cart in the curb lane on Broadway Road when the crash occurred. Reports from the scene state that he was rear-ended by a BMW traveling in the same lane and direction.

Mesa EMTs arrived at the scene shortly after the wreck occurred, though they say Koenig died before he could be transported to an area medical center.

Authorities say that impairment was not a factor in the collision, and they have not identified the driver of the BMW. The accident remains under investigation at this time.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Jeremy Koenig.

Fatal Car Crashes in Arizona

Mesa, AZ - UPDATE: Jeremy Koenig Killed in Crash at Gilbert & Broadway RdsAuthorities with the Arizona Department of Public Safety say that there were thousands of accidents in 2019, hundreds of which resulted in deaths statewide. And Arizona has some of the most dangerous roads in the entire country, which include several of the freeway loops and busy intersections that dominate the Phoenix metro area. In fact, one highway in the greater Phoenix region sees nearly 85 deaths per year alone, and the entire state averages 700 traffic deaths each year.

Many of these fatalities are the result of driver negligence. And when it comes to these accidents, victims may suffer from long-term physical issues, costly medical bills, and even job loss or death as a result of their serious injuries. The nature of these collisions means that victims sustain more serious injuries or even lose their lives as a result of the accident.
