Mesa, AZ (July 21, 2019) – A multi-vehicle accident on Sunday afternoon, July 21st, blocked the HOV lane on Loop 202 westbound near Loop 101 southbound.
Authorities responded to the wreck on L-202 westbound, also known as the Red Mountain Freeway, which occurred when multiple vehicles collided around 4:55 p.m. In addition to fire rescue units responding, Phoenix police were on the scene to assist victims and investigate the accident. At least two vehicles appear to be involved in the wreck, which remains under investigation.
All lanes re-opened shortly before 5:30 p.m., though authorities were still investigating and have not released the victims’ information.
According to a 2018 report released by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), serious car accidents involving injuries or fatalities are on the rise. In fact, nearly 55,000 injuries and more than 1,000 fatalities occurred as a result of collisions across the state last year. And data from ADOT shows that the summer months bring more traffic to state roads, leading to an increase in dangerous accidents.
