Goodyear, AZ (November 17, 2019) – Further details have been released after a school bus crash that left one boy dead in Goodyear on Friday afternoon.
According to officers from the Goodyear Police Department, the incident happened around 4:00 p.m. near 144th Avenue and Indian School Road, which is close to Western Sky Middle School. Goodyear police say the victim is between 12 and 14 years of age. He had life-threatening injuries when he was taken to the hospital, according to the Goodyear Fire Department, and later succumbed to his injuries.
Officers said there were students on the bus but none of them was injured in the incident. The bus was heading south on 144th Avenue and was turning right onto Indian School Road, where the boy was crossing southbound on a skateboard. An officer at the scene said the impact on the bus was on the right side near the back, not at the front of the bus.
The driver stayed on the scene, and local news video appeared to show officers administering a field sobriety test to the bus driver. Police later said no impairment was suspected but said the accident is still under investigation.
Our condolences go out to the victim’s family at this time.
